A postdoctoral position in experimental biophysics is available in the group of Professor Raghuveer Parthasarathy in the Department of Physics, Materials Science Institute, and Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon. The research focus may be in one or more of the following areas:

(1) /Developmental biophysics /- The candidate would explore mechanisms of multicellular organization in developing zebrafish embryos, using and developing new three-dimensional imaging techniques and collaborating intensively with the University of Oregon’s renowned zebrafish research community.

(2) /Lipid bilayer microrheology /- The candidate would apply recently developed nanoparticle tracking techniques to quantify the two-dimensional fluid dynamics of lipid membranes, focusing especially on connections between viscosity and membrane phase transitions.

(3) /Trafficking proteins and membrane mechanics /- The candidate would investigate the physical mechanisms by which trafficking proteins modulate membrane mechanical properties, implementing optical trap based membrane deformation experiments.

Our group’s research lies at the interface of Physics and Biology and makes use of facilities and collaborative interactions across these areas, providing abundant opportunities for postdoctoral career development. The projects above are funded by the National Science Foundation and the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related field and should have experience – especially in optics or image analysis – that can overlap with the above topics.
The ability to work well with others, including graduate students and undergraduates, the ability to learn new skills quickly, and good communication skills are very important. The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment. The appointment will be for one year with potential renewal for one to two years thereafter.

To apply or for more information, please contact Professor Raghuveer Parthasarathy, Dept. of Physics, University of Oregon, Eugene 97403-1274 or raghu@uoregon.edu. If applying, please send an application letter, curriculum vitae, and the names of three references.
