Job Description: If you have expertise in Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS and wish to contribute to the analysis of challenging problems that will improve the management of natural resources and the environment, then this Researcher position with IWMI could be just the right assignment for you.
The International Water Management Institute (www.iwmi.org) is a non-profit, scientific organization engaged in research and capacity building activities for developing countries. Our mission is to overcome poverty through the better management of land and water resources. Working with diverse partners and supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (www.cgiar.org), IWMI seeks to translate its research findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers, resource managers and poor rural communities. IWMI is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and has regional offices in 12 countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Location:
The position will be based at IWMI Headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Reporting:
The Researcher will work under the guidance of the Theme Leader: Water Availability and Access.
Job Purpose:
To apply spatial analyses to water resources and land management aspects in IWMI projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specialist
• Provide RS/GIS expertise to multidisciplinary projects on water-based agricultural issues across Asia and Africa
• Develop RS-based methods for assessing water use in river basins, with possibilities including water accounting, river flow monitoring, and environmental flow assessment.

• Use RS products and other spatial datasets to support basin-wide modeling
General
• Conduct research consistent with IWMI’s mission and priorities;
• Publish results in international scientific journals and other relevant media and ensure research results are disseminated to targeted groups;
• Contribute to future research proposals
• Ensure activities comply with IWMI corporate policies and procedures
Qualifications:
Essential
PhD in Remote Sensing/ GIS applications in water management
OR
Ph.D. in Hydrology, Water Resources Management or related discipline with strong emphasis on the use of RS and GIS techniques;
Knowledge & Experience:
Essential
•Minimum of 5 years of research experience in this field of RS applications in water resources / agricultural water management
•Knowledge of the challenges posed by environmental impacts of global change on one hand, and rapidly developing RS techniques on the other
•Knowledge of a variety of RS/ GIS tools and software
•Knowledge of range of spatial data sources and tools including various satellite and radar precipitation products, satellite altimetry, digital elevation and topography models
•Experience in scientific publishing and a record of relevant peer-reviewed articles in international journals as first author
Desirable
•Knowledge of agricultural systems
•Knowledge of evapotranspiration products, drought/flood monitoring systems
•Knowledge of hydrological/water resources modeling e.g. SWAT, Mike Basins/WEAP or knowledge of geo-hydrological/water quality models. Good understanding of RS inputs to models
•Previous work experience in developing countries and/or in the international context
