Postdoctoral Research position in School of Biosciences,Exester, UK
Job Description: The School of Biosciences, Exeter wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the laboratory of Dr Mark Wood on a Project Development Grant funded by the University. The position will start on 1st July 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and the successful applicant will be working on two ongoing collaborative projects, one with Dr Matthew Whiteman (Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry) and Professor Nick Talbot (School of Biosciences). The project in association with Dr Whiteman will investigate the synthesis of some novel hydrogen sulfide-releasing molecules for use in medical research and the project in association with Professor Talbot will be directed towards the preparation of a C-trehalose derivative for use in studies on the fungal plant pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae. These projects are aimed ultimately at laying the foundations for the establishment of a permanent Synthetic Chemistry Facility within the School of Biosciences. The appointment will be for a 6 month fixed term at 50% FTE.
Applicants will have obtained a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, preferably with some additional postdoctoral experience in this field. The applicant should be a confident scientist, capable of independent working, with a thorough working knowledge of this research field. They should be experienced in a wide range of modern synthetic techniques and fully conversant with modern techniques for structure determination, particularly NMR and mass spectrometry. Applicants must be able to design their own experiments, prepare data for publication and actively engage is cross-disciplinary discussions with all of the collaborators involved in the two projects.
