Research Position in Structural Genomics Consortium, Oxford University, UK

Job Description: The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), is an international UK-Canadian-Swedish collaboration whose primary objective is to determine the 3-dimensional structures of human and malaria proteins and release them into the public domain. The SGC is funded by the Wellcome Trust, a group of Canadian and Swedish funding agencies, GlaxoSmith-Kline, Norvartis and Merck. The SGC is a major provider of structural information focused on proteins related to human health, contributing more than 20% of the global output of novel human structures each year (29.6% in 2009) and accounting for more than 15% of the total structural coverage of human proteins. The SGC is now applying its high throughput methods and experience to the field of membrane protein structural biology. For more information on the SGC please see the web at http://www.sgc.ox.ac.uk.

The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) in Oxford is seeking a postdoctoral scientist with experience in the membrane proteins field to join our Integral Membrane Proteins (IMP) Group, lead by Dr Liz Carpenter. The aim of the IMP group is to solve structures of human integral membrane proteins, and to study their function and interactions with small molecule drugs. In the past year we have developed a pipeline for the production of membrane proteins from the baculovirus/insect cell system and we have screened over 200 proteins for expression and purification. These proteins include channels, solute carriers, ABC transporters, enzymes and GPCRs. Many of these proteins expressed well and are currently undergoing purification optimization and crystallisation studies. We have lead crystals of three IMPs to date, an ABC transporter, a solute carrier and an enzyme, all with diffraction to better than 10Å.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and energetic scientist to assist with purification, crystallisation, crystal optimization and functional studies for a variety of IMPs. You would be joining a team of 12 membrane protein scientists, working in close collaboration to obtain structures, purification methods and functional data for some of the most biologically and pharmacologically important and challenging proteins in the human proteome.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in at least two of the following areas: integral membrane protein purification, functional characterisation, crystallization and crystal optimization. You will have research experience relating to integral membrane protein structural and/or functional studies and be keen to work as part of a highly collaborative team.

An application form and a job description are available from the web link:http://www.sgc.ox.ac.uk/jobs/or from the Personnel Officer on tel: 01865 617604, email: orcrb.personnel@ndm.ox.ac.uk. Please quote the reference H9-10-012-SGC.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Friday 24 September 2010. Applications received after this deadline will not be accepted.
