Postgraduate Fellowship in Book and Paper Conservation in Winterthur Museum, USA

Winterthur Museum Post graduate fellowship in Book and Paper Conservation: The Winterthur Museum will host a two year post graduate fellowship in book and paper conservation to begin by January, 2009. During the two year fellowship, the conservation fellow will work in the Library Conservation Laboratory with a dual emphasis on the treatment of rare bound and unbound materials and the techniques of collection care involved in exhibiting and maintaining a research collection. The fellow will be supervised by the both the head of the Library and the head of the Paper Laboratory. The Fellow is strongly encouraged to interact with curators, Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation (WUDPAC) students, faculty, and guest speakers by attending lectures and taking selected course work in other disciplines including  textiles, organic and inorganic objects, photographs, paintings and conservation science.

The Fellow will have full access to Winterthur’s Scientific Research and Analysis Laboratory as well as the Winterthur and University of Delaware Libraries and may assist in teaching in the WUDPAC program. During the second year, the Fellow will undertake a treatment/research project designed to integrate their conservation interests and experience.

The Winterthur Library collections encompass a wide variety of printed, manuscript, and visual materials that promote the interdisciplinary study of American art, material culture and everyday life. The collections support both visiting and residential research fellowships as well as the research and exhibition needs of the Winterthur Museum and two graduate programs. Its resources include more than 87,000 volumes of printed books and serials and 2,740 record groups of manuscripts and printed ephemera comprising over a million individual items.

The stipend amount is $32,000 per year plus benefits and $3,000 for travel and research each year.

Eligibility: Completion of graduate-level degree or equivalent in book and paper conservation, including one or more college level chemistry courses. The applicant must also have a basic knowledge of book and paper history and technology and its application to the care, treatment and assessment of collection objects.
