Postgraduate Research Studentship, Risk-Cost Optimization for Underground Sewer Pipeline Network, University of Greenwich, UK

Job Description: The aims of this study are to develop an innovative and integrated technological tool that can be used by water industry to predict and then decide when, where, what and how interventions are needed to prevent unexpected failures of sewer pipeline and ensure their safe and reliable operation during their whole service life at the minimal cost. The above aims are to be achieved by pursuing the following specific objectives:
(a) To quantify the risk of pipe failures as measured by structural safety and serviceability during their whole service life;
(b) To develop a method for the prediction of the remaining safe life of sewer pipes subjected to H2S induced corrosion.

The methodology for the research will be a combination of analytical, numerical and experimental approaches. In particular, time-dependent reliability methods will be used to quantify the risk of pipe failures over time and both in-situ and lab tests will be carried out to produce necessary data used in computations.

Education and Training:

  • 1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelors Degree or Masters degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline
  • For those whose first language is not English, a language proficiency score of at least IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (computerised equivalent 250).

Other Requirements:

  • This studentship will require Academic Technology Approval Scheme approval for the successful candidate if from outside of the EU/EEA
  • Highly motivated and ability to meet deadlines
