Postgraduate Research Studentship, Research, University of Greenwich, UK

Job Description: New stormwater management approaches promote deep infiltration and recharge, partly restoring the pre-urbanisation water balance; while also providing warm stormwater temperature regulation, and aesthetic & ecological value if possible. In the US it is a growing trend and also now in the UK. The current regulatory context is complex and responsibilities dispersed but, crucially, the upcoming UK Floods and Water Management bill will bring focus, and make current recommendations mandatory, maintain ‘greenfield’ runoff rate or frequency. Some water companies already provide incentives such as rebates to households whose surface water is disconnected. While Local Authorities s are responsible for flood risk and water management, and can bind agreements with developers. All the above factors are producing a mounting interest in Low Impact Development and source-control techniques -Sustainable (urban) Drainage Systems, SuDS- that store water and then either evaporate it (e.g. green roofs, attractive where land is at a premium since may constitute up to 40% of impervious area; Berndtsson 2010) or infiltrate it (e.g. rain gardens, which provide bioretention and recharge; Dussaillant et al. 2004, Asleson et al 2009, Davis et al. 2009).

However, major unknowns remain. The efficiency of on-site solutions has few if any ways of being calculated a-priori for engineering design purposes. For example, in the UK there is lack of rigorous research data (for UK climate, soil and vegetation), nor design tools for rain gardens and green roofs (no academic publications), nor formal technical guidance on implementation. This is particularly key if they are going to be promoted by legislation and economic incentives. The main aim of this project is to develop an enhanced design tool that not only considers water balance for the design but also pollutant retention considerations, by adapting an already successful design tool (RECARGA; http://dnr.wi.gov/runoff/models, also applied to mainland Europe and South American contexts), The proposal builds on the PI’s 10-year experience on monitoring, modelling and design of rain gardens (Dussailllant et al. 2002, 2004, 2005a,b; Aravena & Dussaillant 2009).

Application Deadline: 24th September 2010
