Postgraduate Scholarship Program 2009: CSIRO Australia

Postgraduate Scholarship Program 2009: Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation () is offering Postgraduate Scholarships to provide prospective students with the opportunity to undertake postgraduate research aligned with National Research Priorities in partnership with CSIRO. Top-up scholarships are available to PhD students who have gained (or expect to gain) an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent. In certain circumstances, full scholarships are also available.
There are two programs under which you can apply for a scholarship.
The Corporate Postgraduate Scholarship program is offering 20 scholarships in the following areas:

Let me introduce you myself first. My name is Birhanu Desalegn Mihretie who graduated from Jimma University Faculty of law, Ethiopia in LL.B (first degree in law) on 05 July 2007. Now I am working & giving the public service in the Ministry of Transport & Communications as a legal expert starting from December 11 2007 to date. Though I am interested & able to learn I can’t do this because of my incapacity to pay for the program as I am from Ethiopia which is one from the least developed countries. My research interest has to do with investigating industrially/economically important microbial enzymes. My M.Sc. work focused on the manipulation of some environmental factors for the improvement of the production of protease enzyme by Pediococcus acidilactici- a lactic acid bacterium.
I have decided to work on the use of microbial enzymes for ethanol production for my PhD. This is borne out of the rising need for Nigeria to look for an alternative to crude oil exportation as her major source of income. Crude oil exploration as led to a lot of violence in the Niger Delta region and it is also contributing to global warming. Nigeria is blessed with many starch-based crops (potato, cassava, sugar cane, etc) which can be utilized for ethanol production thereby providing another source of income for the rural communities.
However, i would not mind engaging in another/similar line of reearch which is more related to your specialisation so as give me more exposure.

It is my expressed desire to further my qualification by studying for a Masters Degree in an Environment and Natural Resource Management discipline. I am particularly interested in studying coastal resources management because I am working with artesanal fisheries communities, helping themselves monitoring their local, coastal and marine resources. In daily work I sometimes faces some complex problems that can be solved by improving my knowledge in coastal resources.
Most of the population in Mozambique depends on marine resources, although there are a significant number of fisheries in inland waters. Mozambican government’s policy is fighting against poverty. The majority of the population is poor especially in rural areas. Fisheries may be an engine of development for coastal communities if the means of fishing are monitored adequately.
