The Solaire network is offering one postgraduate contract for a student to do research at the postgraduate level leading to a doctoral (PhD) thesis and the completion of the doctor degree.We are looking for motivated, outstanding recent graduates who want to receive research training in Solar Physics in a vibrant, international, network-wide framework.

Statement and description

The successful candidate will have a main supervising node (University of Oslo) and a secondary supervising node (Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias), to guarantee optimum training in different approaches and research tools of the network (supercomputing, ground-based observation, observation from space, theory) and will work on the following topic: Diagnostics of magnetic flux emergence in the solar atmosphere. The appointed student will receive training both at the local level in the appointing nodes as well as a through the various network-wide activities.  PostGraduate Schools, Network Meetings and Complementary-Skills Courses.

Nature of the Appointment
The appointment consists of  a full-time, fixed-term contracts at the University of Oslo  (total 24 months)  and at the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (12 months), both financed with the SOLAIRE Marie Curie Network funds provided by the European Commission. The starting date will be  as soon as possible after the end of this selection procedure.

Who can apply

Applications are welcome from students both from European and non-European countries.

This call is open to recent graduates. In more detail:

by the time of the appointment, the candidates must not have had more than 4 years (full-time equivalent) of research experience after obtaining the diploma giving access to doctoral studies in the country in which the diploma was obtained. Persons who have obtained a doctorate are ineligible for these positions.

According to EU rules for the Marie Curie Research Training Networks, the appointees must be nationals of a State other than that of the host organisation. at the start of their appointment, they may not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the previous 3 years.

Application procedure and deadline

Applicants are requested to submit, before 31st of March, 2008,

1. a filled application form,

2. a Curriculum Vitae

3. an official certificate of the graduation studies followed.

4. two letters of recommendation written by lecturers or researchers well acquainted with the candidate

2. The Curriculum Vitae must describe the previous achievements of the candidate, the studies followed for graduation, any additional training of research activities, knowledge of foreign languages and whatever items the candidate considers of interest in support of his/her application. It can be submitted in pdf or MSWord formats via email, or in printed form via airmail.

3. The official certificate must correspond to the graduation studies pursued by the candidate and must contain subjects studied and marks obtained. If the certificate is not issued in English, then a translation into English must be provided additionally to the original certificate. The certificate (or an identical copy) must be sent via airmail or via email (in the latter case as an image or pdf file). If not sent with the initial submission, the original version of the certificate will be requested to individual candidates at a later time by the selection committee.

4. The letters of recommendation must be filled following the scheme provided here.
