Fellowship Description: Institute for Astronomy. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Annually renewable and continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds.
Minimum Monthly Salary: $3,620
Duties: Participates in the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) survey with the PS1 telescope. Helps with the operation of the Pan-STARRS Image Processing Pipeline (IPP), including pipeline monitoring, data evaluation, algorithm testing and modification, scientific software development, and scientific analysis of the survey data. Uses a wide range of representative data from the PS1 telescope and external sources to verify the working capabilities of the PS1 system and to recommend improvements and modifications. Serves as scientific data reduction and analysis Liaison between one of the PS1 Science Consortium Member Institutions and the Pan-STARRS Image Processing Pipeline (IPP) software team. Works with scientists from that PS1 Science Consortium Member Institution to promote access and analysis of PS1 data and metadata. Visits the PS1 Science Consortium Member Institution semi-annually.
Secondary Qualifications: Two to four (2-4) years of postdoctoral research in areas of astronomy relevant to Pan-STARRS (e.g., solar system, cosmology, galactic populations, variable and transient phenomena). Experience with state-of-the-art image combination and difference techniques and astronomical object modeling. Experience with management of UNIX computers, including clustered systems. Experience with precision astrometry and photometry. Experience with astronomical data formats and data representations. Experience with relational databases.
