Job Description: HTLV-1 persists in the host by driving proliferation of the infected T-lymphocyte. The resulting clonal proliferation is associated with both the inflammatory diseases (e.g. HAM/TSP) and malignant diseases (ATLL) that are caused by HTLV-1. However, the factors that determine the size and the pathogenic potential of an HTLV-1-infected T cell clone in vivo are unknown. In this project, which is funded by a three-year Project Grant from the Wellcome Trust, we aim to answer the question how and to what extent does the integration site of the HTLV-1 provirus in the host cell genome determine the size of the HTLV-1-infected T cell clone and its potential to cause disease.
The post holder will assist with the mathematical modelling of the dynamics of HTLV-1 clonal proliferation and a bioinformatic analysis of the mapped proviral insertion sites.
Applications must have a good first degree in Mathematics, Physics, Bioinformatics or equivalent. An MSc in Mathematical Biology or equivalent would be desirable. Previous experience of mathematical immunology would be an advantage.
The post is full-time and available for three years from September 2010. There will be a possibility for the Research Assistant to register for a PhD. Interviews will be held on 25, 26 and 27 August 2010.
