Research Assistant, School of Law, Queen’s University, UK

Job Description: Available for nine months beginning 1 November 2010, to undertake activities in the areas of human exploitation (re: slavery, forced labour, trafficking) as part of a Leverhulme funded project by Dr Jean Allain entitled ‘Slavery in Domestic Jurisdictions’. This project will gather legislation and case-law and build a database to house the material; so as to allow for its analysis.

MAJOR DUTIES :
Research:
Undertake research activities with regard to the gathering of legal material related to human exploitation. Such research will be desk-top and may include field work.
Create a web-based database and populate it with material presented in an easily accessible manner.
Evaluate the material within the context of the area of human exploitation.
Carry out routine administrative duties required of the project.
Survey academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of the area of human exploitation and bring these to the attention of the grant holder.
Carry out any other duties designated by the grant holder and line manager which fall within the general ambit of the post.
Undertake staff training.

Planning and Organising:
Plan own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed research programme. Plan own monthly programme of work for the grant holder’s approval.
Contribute to the planning of the research project, reports and publications etc.

Essential Criteria:
1. Primary degree in a Social Science subject (including law) or humanities.
2. Successfully completed module/ course in research skills.
3. Demonstrable research interest in issues of human exploitation (e.g. slavery, servitude, and/or forced labour).
4. Experience in or demonstrable knowledge of establishing and functioning of databases.
5. Desktop and library research skills/ experience.
6. Qualitative and quantitative research skills/ experience.
7. Budgetary management skills.
8. High level of typing skills.
9. Fluent in English, both oral and written.
10. Computer literate to a high level.
11. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
12. Diligent, with the ability to work independently and proactively.
13. Must be willing and able to travel for weeks at a time.
