Job Description: The relation between stratospheric intrusions and deep convection is one that is often alluded to in the scientific literature, but it has never been explained in detail. This project seeks to fill the gap, by using a combination of: (i) analysis of archived ozonesonde and VHF radar profiles; (ii) detailed case studies of a spectrum of events; (iii) modelling a sample of these events using a weather forecasting model. The goal is to build a conceptual model linking tropopause folds and tropopause-level cyclonic anomalies to the occurrence of deep convection, that may be used by operational meteorologists to improve weather forecasts.

You should hold a PhD or equivalent in atmospheric science, with experience of synoptic or mesoscale meteorology, and possess good programming skills and an ability to organise and manage a project.
The position is available for 36 months.

‘:£28,983 – £35,646 p.a.
