Job Description: The Centre for Systems Biology at Edinburgh (CSBE) seeks a postdoctoral research assistant to contribute to the research in both the Millar and Halliday laboratories. The Centre is hosted by the School of Biological Sciences and has members drawn from Biological Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and Informatics.
You will be a high-calibre researcher developing a tract record in innovative, interdisciplinary research. As a part of your responsibilities, you will be involved in developing software that allows: annotation and storage of experimental results, data processing and analysis, integration with modelling tools. Experience in web development with Java is essential as your project will be part of CSBE’s Java-based software infrastructure. You will need good working knowledge of XML-related technologies (XSLT, JAXB), web frameworks (Struts, JSF), Java persistence (JPA, Hibernate) and web services (JAX-WS). A proven ability to produce high-quality publications is essential, together with teamwork experience and real enthusiasm for biology.
1. Develop software tools that facilitate analysis of high throughput data, for which a broad range of theoretical approaches to data analysis and modelling will be required. Identify, develop and integrate new research, methods and techniques appropriate to each area. Also good software development practices such as testing and documentation. (50%)
2. Oversight of, and effective integration with, software development within affiliated projects; an example would be CSBE’s broader Java-based software infrastructure. (10%)
3. Monitor, contribute to and ensure compliance with evolving international standards for systems biology software. Provide expert advice and assistance for junior staff and research students as required. (10%)
4. Support initiatives aimed at increasing adoption and use of software and computational by in-house researchers and external collaborators in dynamic modelling projects. (10%)
5. Where appropriate, contribution to funding applications in support of research and software development. An active personal research publication profile. (10%)
6. Contribute effectively to relevant project teams via active participation in multi-disciplinary team meetings using excellent communication skills, including an ability to explain technical designs and issues to non-technical collaborators. (10%)
