Research Associate in Computational Biology, UK
Research Associate, Computational Biology, University of Cambridge, UK
Job Description: Applications are invited for a computational biologist to join the research team of Prof. Austin Smith working in close collaboration with the group of Dr Paul Bertone at the European Bioinformatics Institute. We are using state-of-the-art experimental and computational methods for the analysis of transcriptional regulation in mouse embryonic stem cells. You will be responsible for the design, data processing and integrated analysis of RNA-seq and ChIP-seq experiments.
You will work closely with biologists in the Smith lab and benefit from regular interaction with computational scientists in the Bertone lab, with full access to the EBI computing infrastructure. This arrangement provides an excellent environment for research and career development, as you will take advantage of the resources and expertise at both institutes to carry out multidisciplinary projects. You will also provide bioinformatics support for related projects in the Smith lab, including single cell transcriptome studies.
Candidates will have a solid background in computation and current knowledge of eukaryotic genomics. Expertise in statistical methods, numerical computing, programmatic database usage and Unix scripting are essential. Applicants should also be fluent in least one high-level programming language. Experience with analysis of high-throughput sequencing data is desirable, as is knowledge of heterogeneous data integration and regulatory systems modelling.
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of independent research and a strong publication record. Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or Biochemistry/Molecular Biology with a computational component). The post holder will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and proven ability to engage productively with experimental biologists. Experience in stem cell biology is not necessary.
The post is funded by the BBSRC.
Applications should contain a covering letter, CV, completed CHRIS 6 form (parts 1, 2 & 3), which can be downloaded from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/, with the names and addresses of three referees. These should be sent quoting the reference PA06979 by email to cscrjobs@cscr.cam.ac.uk or by post to Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, UK, CB2 1QR. Applications must be received by 12.00 (noon) on Monday 13th September 2010 (extended from original deadline on 31st August 2010).
* Limit of tenure: up to 28th February 2013.
Closing date: 13 September 2010.
