Research Associate in the Systems Biology of Bacterial Phagocytes, UK
Research Associate of Systems Biology of Bacterial Phagocytes in Imperial College London,UK
Job Description: A Research Associate position is available at Imperial College London to investigate the molecular mechanism of phagosome formation during the interactions of mammalian macrophages with intracellular pathogens, using a systems biology approac.
The project will be part of PHAGOSYS FP7 European network involving partners in Germany, the Netherlands and Slovenia. At Imperial College it involves experimental cell biologist Dr. Vania Braga at the National Lung and Research Institute and experimental microbiologist Dr. Brian Robertson. The project will be integrated into the activities of the BBSRC/EPSRC-funded Centre for Integrated Systems Biology at Imperial College (CISBIC). You will be based in the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection (CMMI), Flowers Building located at South Kensington campus.
You will join the group of Dr. Vania Braga at the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection (CMMI). The group applies a variety of biochemical, cellular and molecular approaches to the analysis of the early phases of phagocytic uptake and its manipulation by microbial pathogens. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with experimental microbiologist Dr. Brian Robertson and mathematician Dr Vahid Shahrezaei, both members of PHAGOSYS.
The successful candidate will carry out research programmes in the molecular and systems biology of uptake of intracellular pathogens (Mycobacterium) by mammalian macrophages using a variety of techniques, including RNA interference, high resolution imaging and RNAi screens. You will be responsible for day-to-day project management and be actively involved in the dialogue with modelling and experimental partners from PHAGOSYS. In addition, you will be expected to keep up-to-date with the relevant literature, contribute scientific ideas to the project and submit publications to refereed journals.
You must hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in the area of host-pathogen interaction with preferred emphasis on the molecular cell biology and signalling, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience. Knowledge of phagocytic signalling and microbial uptake pathways and of research methods and statistical procedures is essential. Students about to graduate with a PhD will be considered, provided they are able to join the project on the planned start date.
You must also be able to prioritise tasks within agreed work schedules and organize your work with minimal supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication are essential.
This position is funded by the European Union for up to 15 months.
Closing Date: 28 July 2010 (midnight GMT/BST)
