Research Associate:Theory and Simulation of Silicon-Germanium Single Photon Detectors, UK
Research scholarship in Physical Science
Job Description: This post is part of a multi-university project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The work will involve the development of theory and simulation methods for use in the design of Ge/SiGe infra-red single photon detectors which will be fabricated and characterised by the experimental team within this project. The theoretical approaches required will include pseudopotential bandstructure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations of carrier transport and impact ionisation. Thermal modelling based on pre-existing and commercial software will also be involved. Overall the work will involve extensive software development, but combined with use and, where appropriate, expansion, of pre-existing codes, along with application of these tools to device design and optimisation problems, and interpretation of experimental data. The successful candidate will be working as part of an experienced team focussing on simulation and design of silicon photonic devices, and will also be part of the EPSRC funded UK Silicon Photonics consortium.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• Development of new simulation software, in particular, Monte Carlo algorithms for electron transport and impact ionisation modelling.
• Theoretical work required to support software design.
• Application of in-house and commercial simulation tools to design novel Ge/SiGe single photon detectors.
• Close liaison with the experimental partner groups.
• Attendance and presentation of work at regular project consortium meetings.
• Carry out any other duties associated with the post as may arise from time to time.
• Attendance at any training courses necessary to support the above.
• Interpretation of data obtained by experimental partners.
• Contribute to decisions affecting the work of the team.
Additionally, the following duties will be required for appointment to Grade 7:
• Use of new research techniques and methods.
• Use of creativity to analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes.
• Use of initiative and creativity to identify areas for research.
• Use of initiative in liaising with and advising experimental partners on project activity.
• Preparation of high quality journal papers.
• Participation in national and international conferences.
• Procurement and management of research resources as appropriate. Planning and management of research activity in collaboration with others.
• Balancing the competing pressures of research and administrative demands and deadlines.
• Provide informal support and advice to junior researchers.
Key Working Relationships
Working with Dr Rob Kelsall, Dr Zoran Ikonic and the silicon photonics team at Leeds. There will also be regular project meetings with the other UK university partners, and with the UK Silicon Photonics consortium.
Closing Date: 2 august 2010
