Research Fellow in Synthetic Organic Chemistry ,Queen’s University Belfast, Ireland, UK
Job purpose : The work encompasses the development of synthetic methods to selectively functionalise aminoglycosides for the preparation of therapeutically relevant bioconjugates. In addition to contributing to the group’s research effort, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the day to day running of the King’s Medicinal Chemistry laboratory and closely interact with his/her biologist colleagues working on this project.
Major duties :
Developing on methodologies recently identified in our laboratory, the researcher will expend the range of chemical templates, scaffold and functionalities which need to be accessed to improve upon the overall therapeutic potential of aminoglycosides as antiproliferative agents against lung-related diseases.
Design, develop and refine experiments/structures, so that improved synthetic efficacy of the bioconjugates can be achieved.
Work as part of a team of researchers composed of trainee students, PhD and experienced researchers working at the interface between chemistry and biological sciences.
Make periodic presentations and contribute actively to the overall research group report activities.
To obtain grant funding for fellowships, awards, project or travel support.
To attend and present their findings at research group meetings or at national or international meetings if required. Prepare, in consultation with the supervisor, material for publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
Assist in the supervision of post-graduate students or project students. To contribute to the maintenance of pieces of analytical equipment, such as NMR, HPLC and FPLC as well as that of general synthetic laboratory equipment.
Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in own specialism and related disciplines.
Carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project/s to ensure that the projects milestones are completed on time and within budget. These tasks will include financial control and risk assessment of research activities.
Any other reasonable duties within the general ambit of the post and competence of the post-holders.
Planning and Organising: Independent, day to day planning of experiments and 1-3 month (short-term) planning of research. 6-9 months (long-term) organisation of the research direction/targets as well as contingency planning. Prioritise and reprioritisation of research/experiments in order to meet deadlines and targets. Organise informal meetings communicate directly with other lab members or with supervisor.
Resource Management Responsibilities: Support the development and training of other staff in the group by making available their research experience and expertise. Take shared responsibility for the upkeep of lab equipment and replenishment of lab stocks and exercise due diligence when using equipment.
Internal and External Relationships: Communicate openly with colleagues latest research findings and exciting results. Develop contacts with other labs within the research community at Queen’s and look to identify potential cross-discipline collaborations.
