Research Fellow Position University of Bergen
Research fellow (PhD position) in Developmental Biology of Marine SpongesThe Sars International Centre and The University of Bergen/Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences are now offering a Research Fellow (PhD position) for 3 years in developmental biology of marine sponges. The Sars International Centre is a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and a department of Unifob, affiliated with the University of Bergen.
Sponges are basal multicellular animals considered to be the sister group of “true” animals. Recent data demonstrate that wnt, hedgehog and tgf-beta signalling pathways that govern development of the higher animals are also active in sponge embryos. Our laboratory studies development of species representing disparate sponge phyla: Amphimedon queenslandica, a recently sequenced tropical demosponge, and Sycon boreale, a calcareous sponge common in Bergen area fjords. The successful candidate will investigate interactions of signaling molecules, transcription factors and cytoskeletal proteins during development of Sycon boreale. The methods will include construction and analysis of EST and genomic libraries, gene expression studies, knock-down and over-expression of developmentally important genes and advanced imaging.
Applicants should have an interest in evolution of developmental mechanisms and a sound background in developmental biology and/or molecular and cell biology. The position is available immediately, start date negotiable. For further information regarding the position and scientific content of the project please contact Dr. Maja Adamska, Group Leader: maja.adamska@sars.uib.no, +47 55584351.
The research fellow must take part in the University’s approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the research group in question.
The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow.
Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent qualification by peer-reviewed research accomplishment, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.
Starting salaries at level 43 (code 1017) on the government salary scale; currently NOK 325,800 gross p.a.; following ordinary meriting regulations (range 43/47).
