Research Fellowship in Evolutionary Modelling at School of Biology, University of St Andrews, UK -2011/2012
Study Subject(s):Evolutionary Modelling
Scholarship Provider: ERC
Scholarship can be taken at: UK
You should have a PhD in Biology or a relevant adjacent discipline, experience of population genetic/game theory modelling and a good knowledge of social learning research.
Scholarship Open for International Students: No
Scholarship Description: You will try to address these questions by specifying learning algorithms for each learning process, and testing their success in different environmental conditions (varying, for instance, in rates of change, in distribution, and in the structure and complexity of learning tasks). Over-and-above the mechanisms, social learning made be guided by adaptive rules, known as ‘social learning strategies’, specifying from whom individuals should learn, and when to copy others. You will develop evolutionary mathematical models that consider the costs and benefits of reliance on different types of information, drawing on the social learning literature, deploying game-theoretical or population genetics tools. You will seek to derive qualitative predictions from our analysis, which can be tested empirically. These predictions will be evaluated through experiments on social learning in humans, budgerigars or sticklebacks, as appropriate, chosen because there is ongoing research on these species in Prof. Laland’s laboratory.
