Job Description: The purpose of the job is to undertake research on the functional role of microRNAs expressed by the herpes virus human cytomegalovirus. The research will focus mainly on the identification of miRNA target genes and determination of the functional relevance of these targets in relation to viral infection.
Planning and Organizing:
Following discussion with the Principal Investigator, the job-holder will be responsible for planning the experimental protocols, setting up and carrying out experiments. A strong degree of independence is expected. Appropriate methodologies will be developed with the Project Leader. It is expected that weekly meetings with the Principal Investigator take place to plan long term and short term research goals.
Problem Solving:
The job-holder will be expected to tackle routine technical problems during the course of their work and also have input into innovative ideas on how the biological problems being addressed should be investigated, as they arise within the group. Complex technical issues will be dealt with after liaising with the Principal Investigator.
Decision Making:
Although the overall direction of the work will be defined by the project objectives and the outcomes of research group meetings, the job holder will be expected to work relatively independently in developing this aspect of the project. This will require an ability to make decisions on experimental approaches when performing routine experiments. Any major changes in direction and/or approach with regards to experiments or goals have to be discussed with the Principal Investigator.
Key Contacts / Relationships:
This position involves close collaboration with Prof. Tony Nashes, Dr Bernadette Dutia and Dr Amy bucks group at the Roslin Institute, as well as with other collaborators who remain to be defined. The job holder will need to have good inter-personal skills. Supervision of students will mainly involve practical advice in the laboratory.
