Scholarship Description:If you have strong research interests on issues related to irrigation development and are looking for an exciting and challengingopportunity to contribute solutions to the problems of irrigation in one of the most important irrigated regions of the world, we may have the job for you. As part of its global efforts to revitalize irrigation, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is launching an exciting new four-year project that aims to transform irrigation in Pakistan’s Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) – theworld’s largest contiguous irrigation system. We seek a highly motivated and skilled researcher coming from the areas of physical or social sciences to contribute to our efforts. You will be based at IWMI’s Pakistan office in Lahore and will report to the Theme Leader of IWMI’s research theme on Water and Society.
The Project
Working alongside high caliber national partners, the project aims to enhance the performance of irrigation in the IBIS through technological and management innovations, institutional strengthening and policy reforms to meet the challenges of national food security, water scarcity and the impacts of climate change. The project will use research-based evidence to inform change at the highest levels.
As an Irrigation Researcher, you will:
• be responsible for delivering quality research outputs;
• design and oversee the implementation of research activities within your area of expertise to support the overall project;
• ensure the effective dissemination of research findings;
• have research management skills and the ability to guide and supervise national research staff; and
• be part of, and contribute to, IWMI’s global program on irrigation revitalization.
You will possess:
• a PhD in a relevant discipline;
• at least 5 years’ experience conducting research on topics related to irrigation, preferably in Pakistan or elsewhere in
South Asia;
• an ability to conceptualize and implement research projects in your field;
• a significant record of research publications on irrigation and water management;
• strong communication skills in written and oral English; and
• excellent diplomacy skills, cross-cultural sensitivity and an ability to easily interact with high level decision makers and inspire clients.
