Call for Research Proposals

Job Description: This announcement aims to foster development of a multi-faceted approach to the prevention and management of STIs and HIV including the role of other microbes (i.e. viruses, bacteria, etc.), behavioral and social interactions, epidemiological factors and co-morbidities associated with HIV transmission, including malignancies associated with other viral infections such as Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) and human papillomavirus (HPV).

The importance of co-morbidities associated with HIV infection was highlighted in an Indo-US workshop: Clinical and Translational Research for Prevention and Treatment of Co-morbidities Associated with HIV Infection held on September 24–25, 2007 in New Delhi, India. This workshop was organized under the aegis of the Indo-US Joint Statement for Collaboration on Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV/AIDS. This funding opportunity would support the study of individual prevention/management strategies/interventions, as well as combination prevention/management strategies.

Applications may include, but are not limited to collaborations addressing the following aspects of STIs and HIV/AIDS prevention

* Identification of behavioral, social, epidemiological and/or infectious disease relationships that represent barriers to, and/or opportunities for novel prevention /management strategies,
* Conduct of focused microbiological, epidemiological, translational and behavioral and social science interventions and testing that addresses the implementation and/or understanding of the impact of a prevention/management strategy,
* Acquisition of knowledge that assists the operational aspects of developing and testing prevention/ intervention strategies for HIV/AIDS and/or interventions/treatments for associated co-morbidities,
* Preclinical research to establish clear evidence of physiologically-relevant anti-HIV activity,
* Research to develop approaches to measuring and improving acceptability of and adherence to prevention modalities.
Eligibility:
Grant applications are solicited from scientists holding permanent positions and working in universities, research institutions, public and private organizations (recognized by DSIR). The research groups are expected to be involved in coordinated research activities with the participation of basic scientists, applied scientists, biomedical, sociobehavioral scientists and clinicians from relevant disciplines as appropriate to the research being conducted. Specific areas of interest for this call for proposal(CFP) include studies that may address or be focused within one or more of the following broad research areas.
. Infectious Diseases and HIV/AIDS Co-morbidities
2. Behavioral and Social Sciences
3. Epidemiology (Behavioral and Population)
4. Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
5. Drug Use and Abuse
6. Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (MTCT)
7. Cancer as a co-morbidity of HIV infection and other STDs.
