Research Scholars Awards (MD or PhD Fellowship) in Urologic Research, 2015

The American Urological Association (AUA) is inviting application for research scholars program to support young men and women who are interested in pursuing a career in urological research. At least ten One-year and two-year fellowships for M.D.s and PhD’s are available for the 2015 Research Scholars Program. All research must be conducted in an appropriate laboratory or medical facility within the boundaries of the eight sections of the AUA. If the research is being conducted in the United States, applicants are not required to be US citizens but must have a valid Social Security numbers for Internal Revenue Service purposes. The application deadline is September 4, 2014.

Eligibility: Applicants for this fellowship must be either urologists or research scientists within five years of completing a residency or doctorate who aspire to learn scientific techniques, are committed to a career in urological research and who are able to provide evidence of current and/or prior interest/accomplishments in research. This award is not available to current residents in training. If the research is being conducted in the United States, applicants are not required to be U.S. citizens but must have a valid Social Security numbers for Internal Revenue Service purposes. All research must be conducted in an appropriate academic laboratory or medical facility within the boundaries of the eight sections of the AUA. All investigators and institutions must meet all Research Scholar criteria.

Scholarship Open for International Students: US citizens are eligible for this research scholars program. If the research is being conducted in the United States, applicants are not required to be U.S. citizens but must have a valid Social Security numbers for Internal Revenue Service purposes.

Scholarship Description: American Urological Association (AUA)Since 1975, the American Urological Association (AUA) has funded research opportunities for and provided support to young men and women who are interested in pursuing careers in Urologic research. The Research Scholars Program, initially administered by the American Foundation for Urologic Disease, Inc. (AFUD) from 1987 until 2005, has given assistance to more than 525 early career researchers. Now part of the Urology Care Foundation, the Research Scholars Program continues to thrive, promoting urologic advances through the many program participants who have remained active in academic urology today. These innovative researchers continue to build upon the base of experience and knowledge gained during their research fellowships and contribute to building the field of knowledge in urology research that will lead to new treatments and cures.

Number of award(s): There are currently at least 10 awards available for 2015 fellowships. One of the awards is an unrestricted award funded through the Urology Care Foundation.

Duration of award(s): One-year and two-year fellowships for M.D.s and Ph.D.’s are available for the 2015 Research Scholars Program.

What does it cover? An annual salary stipend of $40,000 is paid by the Urology Care Foundation on or about July 1st and on or about January 1st. This salary stipend is intended for salary only and cannot be used for fringe benefits, direct or indirect costs. In addition, the sponsoring institution for M.D. Scholars will be required to match the Foundation’s $40,000 annual salary payment to the Scholar. For M.D. Scholars, the salary stipend match is intended for salary only and cannot include fringe benefits, direct or
indirect costs. The sponsoring institution for Ph.D. Scholars must provide $40,000 in matching support for salary and/or requisite supplies and equipment to complete the research. For Ph.D. Scholars, the salary stipend match may include fringe benefits. Details of the sponsoring institution’s plan for financial support should be provided in the application submitted by Ph.D. Scholars. The institution may include travel costs as part of the support, but the scholar must expend those funds and provide appropriate documentation before applying for funds from the Urology Care Foundation Scholar Travel Support Program.

Selection Criteria: The Applicant’s achievements (as reflected by awards, honors, previous funding, etc.) should indicate his or her potential for success as a urology researcher. The Applicant’s stated career goals, and the letters of recommendation should provide indications of his or her commitment to pursuing urology disease research throughout his or her career.

Notification: Awardees will be notified of funding decisions in writing in December 2014. An initial communication will advise the Applicant of whether his/her proposal will be funded.

How to Apply: All applicants for the Urology Care Foundation Research Scholars Award Program must register online where they can:
-provide institution, mentor, and project information;
-download the Application Agreement Form to be signed by the applicant, all mentors, the department chair and a sponsoring institution representative; and
-upload all required documents and materials, and
-submit the complete application package.
