Project Description:
Research in our laboratory focuses on using label-free quantitation in conjunction with shotgun proteomics to investigate a range of environmental stress responses in plant systems, particularly in rice. This involves investigating how rice plants respond to temperature stress and drought stress (with an emphasis on modelling future climate change), heavy metal stress and other environmental factors. We use a variety of shotgun proteomic techniques, and we are always looking at ways of improving these approaches, in terms of sample preparation, analytical parameters and multi-variate statistical analysis. We have a well equipped laboratory with dedicated mass spectrometric resources, access to other local instrumentation, and access to temperature controlled growth chambers and greenhouses for growing plants.
We have a vacancy for a Ph.D. student, who will be expected to pursue their own project while also working closely with others in collaborative endeavours. The project definition in this case is somewhat flexible, so prospective students who have their own project ideas in mind which fit within the broader area are encouraged to apply. Applicants need to have an interest in mass spectrometric techniques, plant biology and biochemistry.

The 2010 MQRES full-time stipend rate is $22,500 pa tax exempt for 3.5 years.
