Research Scholarship, International Rice Research Institute, Philippines
Job Description: Reporting to the Insect Host Plant Resistance Group (HPRG), the successful candidate will conduct field and laboratory experiments directed towards understanding resistance to major insect herbivores in rice and will work towards improving herbivore resistance in South and South Asian rice varieties. He/She will supervise and support research technicians and contract workers in carrying out tasks and will be responsible for the day-to-day running and monitoring of experiments.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Participate in the design and implementation of research experiments and the arrangements of biological materials (i.e. rice varieties, insect colonies) in the laboratory and greenhouse.
2. Oversee the resistance screening function of the HPRG and improve turnover and reliability.
3. Collect data from experiments, conduct preliminary analyses and present data in summarized form.
4. Supervise research technicians and manage resources.
Requirements
•BS degree in Entomology (preferred) or related field. MSc would be an advantage. May be required to participate in social science and education activities.
•Experience in plant production/protection insect rearing and experimentation.
•Computer proficient (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Good interpersonal skills. Should demonstrate excellent organizational abilities.
