Job Description: IWMI seeks a highly competent and motivated individual for the position of ‘Researcher-Social Scientist’ to be based in its South East Asia Office in Vientiane, Laos. The immediate role of the successful candidate will be to contribute to ongoing work related to the role of dams and their revenue streams on water and livelihoods in the Mekong. The Researcher will be expected over time to provide social science perspectives, methodologies and analysis for other research projects related to water use, food production and poverty in Southeast Asia and will be expected to take on progressive responsibility in project design, staff supervision, student mentorship and proposal writing. The Researcher will be expected to develop a successful publication and dissemination plan which includes high quality publications in her/his own field of specialization and in multi-disciplinary journals as well as communication of key policy messages to decision makers and stakeholders.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit, scientific organization engaged in research and capacity building activities for developing countries. Our mission is to overcome poverty through the better management of land and water resources. Working with diverse partners and supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), IWMI seeks to translate its research findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers, resource managers and poor rural communities. IWMI is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and has regional offices located in 12 countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Location:
The position will be based in IWMI’s South East Asia office in Vientiane, Laos and reports to the Theme Leader, Water and Society.
Job Purpose:
To provide social science perspectives, methodologies and analysis to carry out components of research projects related to water use, food production and poverty, initially as related to hydropower in the Mekong.
Qualifications:A Ph.D. in social anthropology, sociology, geography, economics or a related discipline
Experience and Knowledge:
Essential
Minimum of five years research experience on water/land or natural resources management in developing countries
Proven familiarity with social science issues and methods as related to agricultural water use in developing countries
Competence in the application of statistical methods
Proven track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals
Desirable
Experience of living and working in developing countries, especially Southeast Asia
