Job Description: We are looking for an experienced Bioinformatician to work on the assembly and annotation of the ~180 Mb Chironomus tentans genome. The midge Chironomus tentans is used as a model system for studying the complex mechanisms associated with gene expression in eukaryotes.
The successful candidate will be formally affiliated at the Department of Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics at the Stockholm University and will work in close collaboration with bioinformaticians at the Science for Life Laboratory, a national resource center dedicated to large scale research in molecular biosciences (www.scilifelab.se).
The position is initially for one year with possibility for one-year extension (total max. 24 months).
Required qualifications
Applicants should hold a PhD degree in computer science (with application to biology), bioinformatics, molecular biology or equivalent. Experience in standard bioinformatics software, ability to work in UNIX/Linux environments and capacity to handle large datasets are critical. Previous experience in genome assembly and annotation, and the ability to use at least one programming/scripting language (Perl, Python, Java, C, C++) will also be advantageous. Basic knowledge of eukaryotic genomes and gene expression analysis are desirable. Some phases of the project will possibly require experimental work and therefore practical experience in molecular biology methods, or at least interest in learning and applying such methods, will be an asset. The ideal candidate should have worked as a bioinformatician with a strong connection to an experimental research laboratory.
