Scholarships for African Students at the University of Oklahoma
The Ambassador Edward J. Perkins Africa Scholarship was created to facilitate and enhance the development of future leaders who are cognizant of Africa and its importance in matters pertaining to a peaceful coexistence of nations. This endowed scholarship is unique in that it will assist University of Oklahoma students to pursue studies in Africa and for African university students to study at the University of Oklahoma. This fund was established in the memory of the late Marjorie Schenfeld Stewart.
Awards will be given on a competitive basis to qualified undergraduate and graduate students. The amount of each award will be based on factors such as the student’s financial need, estimated program related costs such as travel and living expenses, and the number of approved applicants.
Scholarship applicants must meet the following specific criteria:
1. Junior level standing and a minimum one-year of study at OU by the time of participation.
2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates, 3.3 for graduates.
3. Eligible program destinations are limited to Africa for OU students, and limited to OU for students from African universities.
Recipients will be selected through review of this application and the personal essay. Applicants will be notified of results prior to the end of the spring semester.
Upon program completion, recipients will be interviewed so that their experiences can be shared with other OU students. Program alumni will be invited to assist in various International Programs Center’s activities and program promotion.

My name is Denis Marusoi.I am twenty years old Kenyan. I completed my high school education in the year 2007 and obtained a mean grade of B with 64 points. In cluster subjects I had the following; A – in Mathematics, B+ in English, B in Physics, B in Biology , B in Geography, B in Agriculture, C+ in Chemistry and C in Kiswahili. Since my high school days I have obtained various certificates as follows; Best boy in form three, Best boy in form four and Mathematician of the year award, an award held annually at our school, Moi Minariet high school. In a Mathematics contest held at Kericho high school on 2007 for the whole of Rift valley province, I emerged the best overall out of 500 students who did the contest. In a Chemistry contest held at AIC Litein Girls high school involving three districts, I emerged the top out of the 200 students who did the contest. A survey done by the most widely read newspaper in the country, THE NATION, pertaining Mathematics in high school ranked me as the most promising and upcoming Mathematician in the country at 19 years of age. I was featured in THE NATION newspaper on 24th October 2007, page 7 on the educational section. This is because I had obtained a mean grade of A plain since form one to form four and I was undefeated in contests. I obtained a certificate in District athletics competition in 100 meters dash for being number two. When I finished high school, I enrolled to Sotik Computer College for certificate level in computer application. With this I can assure you that I will not let you down if I receive any scholarship in any field of learning. The Ethiopian economy remains heavily dependent on agriculture, which accounts for about 50 percent of the GDP. An estimated 85% of the population gains its livelihood directly or indirectly from agricultural production. Coffee exports accounts for more than 65 percent of foreign exchange earnings, while processed and semi-processed hides and skins are the second important foreign exchange earners.
The level of development of the manufacturing sector in Ethiopia is at its infancy; and the country’s industrial base is very low. The share of intermediate and capital goods industry is very insignificant. The industrial sector is heavily dependent on imports of semi-processed goods, raw materials, spare -parts and fuel. In addition to imported inputs, the factories depend upon backward and subsistence agriculture for their raw material demand.
It is only fourteen years since Ethiopia began moving from a state run economy to the market economy. The country is in the process of taking various reform measures.
The industries include food processing and beverages, automotive industries which include production of components and parts, textile and textile products and garments, leather and leather products, fertilizers (mini-Plant) and chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals are some among others.
The “service” sector which consists of Trade, Transport and Communications, Banking, Insurance and Real State, Public Administration and Defense, Education, Health and Domestic and other personal services has increased
The government has initiated a privatization program since 1995/96. Since this period of time, 85% of 909 factories have been privatized. However the number of manufacturing industries at the verge of the EPRDF led government was 283 operating only 20% of their manufacturing capacity compared with 70% currently.
The government uses different mechanisms to guide the economy on the right track which lead it to the way of development. Among the others, helping the private sector to be the leader in the free market economy is the crucial one. The Development Bank of Ethiopia provides long, medium & short term loan with technical supports for privet sector on behalf of the government.

I completed my high school in the year 2007 and attained a mean grade of A-(minus): mathematics A, English A-, kiswahili B, physics A, chemistry A, biology B+, Geography B and business studies B+. In addition I participated in students congress on science and technology to the provincial level in the years 2006 and 2007.

I am an undergraduate studying Parasitology and Entomology from a reputable Nigerian university. The course years of study is four and i am in my third year second semester; currently undergoing my Industrial Attachment Programme with National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control(NAFDAC) Nigeria.
