About Chevening Scholarships
The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a prestigious awards scheme that funds international postgraduate students who want to study in the UK for one academic year. Funded by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, the scheme operates in over 150 countries and annually provides funding for over 2 300 scholars.
Applications are only accepted at certain times of the year and these will be advertised here on this site and in the local newspapers.

This is a prestigious award that gives you the chance to experience a world-renowned educational system. In addition, it provides you with the opportunity to experience UK life and meet other Chevening scholars. Who can apply?
You can apply for a Chevening scholarship if:
You are a postgraduate student who can prove your academic success and who has already begun a career in your chosen field
You’ll need to show you have between 2 and 5 years working experience (depending on the country you are applying in), with an excellent track record illustrating your achievements and your potential to use the skills gained during your scholarship to make a difference in your country
You have achieved an excellent mark for you undergraduate degree and can provide a transcript of your academic record. Specific academic requirements are available from the British Council offices in your country.
You must be 21 years and older (there are upper age limits for specific countries so please ensure you check this during your applications process)
You must be a resident in your country when you apply and provide your birth certificate (with translation)
You must have good English language skills (most UK Higher Education institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission into postgraduate courses)
How to apply
You will need to submit the following documents to us when the application season is open:
Complete the application online or the download the form depending on the country. (See below).

supporting letters from two referees
photocopies of academic certificates
transcript/record of exams that you have passed
Applicants will normally be selected from those who wish to take courses in: economics, finance, banking, law, human rights, public administration, management, project planning, media, political science, international relations, diplomatic training and environmental studies although applicants for other courses (as varied as counter-terrorism, religion and energy/climate change) may be considered. You are expected to show a commitment to return to your country, where you will contribute to the country’s socio-economic development using the new skills and knowledge acquired during your stay in the UK.

Truth to tell, I am Coming from a Historically Disadvantaged Family Background where there is Lack of “FINANCIAL SUPPORT” provided by the Family. My Father abandoned me together with my Four sisters when we were still very young after divorcing our Mother. Life has been really miserable, our Father completely became Irresponsible towards our Lives. It is now 23 years ever since our parents divorced. And the situation worsened when both parents became penniless. For instance, our Father was Sacked as he was working with Kampala – City Council. And Our Family House was also Bombed in the 1980’s Liberation War in Our Country Uganda , and all Our Family Properties were destroyed. This greatly retarded Our Family both Financially and Socially; Well as Our Mother is a poor Peasant Farmer. She is a Mother of 5 children to my Father that’s 4 sisters and one son, and I am the Eldest of all. In addition to this, my Course of Education hasn’t been so easy, it has been characterized with a lot of Interruptions in School attendance like dropping out of the School due to Lack of Funds and Enough Scholastic Materials.

In addition to imported inputs, the factories depend upon backward and subsistence agriculture for their raw material demand.
It is only fourteen years since Ethiopia began moving from a state run economy to the market economy. The country is in the process of taking various reform measures.
The industries include food processing and beverages, automotive industries which include production of components and parts, textile and textile products and garments, leather and leather products, fertilizers (mini-Plant) and chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals are some among others.
The “service” sector which consists of Trade, Transport and Communications, Banking, Insurance and Real State, Public Administration and Defense, Education, Health and Domestic and other personal services has increased
The government has initiated a privatization program since 1995/96. Since this period of time, 85% of 909 factories have been privatized. However the number of manufacturing industries at the verge of the EPRDF led government was 283 operating only 20% of their manufacturing capacity compared with 70% currently.
The government uses different mechanisms to guide the economy on the right track which lead it to the way of development. Among the others, helping the private sector to be the leader in the free market economy is the crucial one. The Development Bank of Ethiopia provides long, medium & short term loan with technical supports for privet sector on behalf of the government.
