The School of Communications at Dublin City University is inviting applications for up to five PhD Scholarships. International students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The School of Communications is currently home to almost 40 postgraduate research students at different stages of their studies at both MA/MPhil and PhD levels.

Scholarship Description:

• Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue PhD programme.
• Study Subject: While scholarships are open to those working in a wide array of theoretical, epistemological and methodological approaches relevant to our school, this year, we particularly welcome applications in the following areas:
• Environmental Communication:Fellowship(s) in this area will ideally focus on the communication strategies employed by journalists, NGOs, business, political parties and others concerning environmental issues. Particularly relevant are proposals around the framing of climate change, sustainability, air pollution, single-use plastics, carbon, emissions, fracking, agriculture or transport. • Gender & Digital Media:Fellowship(s) in this area might include gender politics online, digital activism, online identity formation, sexualities and digital culture, pro-anorexia communities, gendered hate speech or gender and cyber-bullying. • Media Policy in Ireland and/or the EU:Preference will be given to proposals which relate to questions of media plurality, ownership and diversity.  These may include policy studies or studies which look at how plurality or diversity are operationalized at the level of content or personnel within media outlets. • Music Industry & Policy:Fellowship(s) in this area will ideally focus on the political economy of the music industries, music and copyright, the music industries in the context of an evolving digital environment, music industry policy, music and the media. • Science or Health Science Communication:Fellowship(s) in this area may range from journalism practice to how media covers such topics and their public reception, to public or stakeholder engagement strategies in science and technology, or interpersonal / public communication between experts and society. • Scholarship Award: The School now has an opening for up to five funded PhD scholarships (across a four-year duration). As well as a tax-free stipend of €16,000 plus fees, we also support our students with funding for conference travel and offer PhD students opportunities to gain teaching experience.

Entrance Requirements: To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following requirements:

To register for a Postgraduate Research programme, a candidate must normally have obtained a primary degree classification equivalent to Lower Second Class Honours or above, from an approved University or an approved equivalent degree-awarding body, or have an approved equivalent professional qualification in an area cognate to the proposed research topic.

• PhD: Candidates holding an appropriate Master’s degree obtained by research may apply for direct entry to the PhD register to conduct research in a cognate area.
• PhD-track: Candidates with a taught Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline with first- or second-class honours, and candidates with a primary degree in an appropriate discipline with first- or second-class honours, grade one, may apply and be considered for entry to the PhD-track register with a view to proceeding towards a PhD. Such candidates will undergo a confirmation procedure, as outlined in the Academic Regulations, before being admitted to the PhD register.
• Master’s by Research: Candidates holding a primary degree equivalent to second-class honours, grade two, may apply for entry on the research Master’s register. Students on the Master’s register may apply for transfer to the PhD Register under the same conditions, and using the same procedure, as PhD-track candidates requesting confirmation on the PhD register.
