The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is offering PhD Studentship program. The successful student will work with Dr Hugh Mortimer at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories to modify a mid-range Infra-Red (mid-IR) hyperspectral camera that he has developed.
These Studentships are available in the project of surveying the marine environment for microplastics using a novel hyperspectral infrared camera on a UAV.
The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, delivering marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through innovative research, education and engagement with society.
Course Level: Studentships are available for pursuing PhD programme.
Study Subject: Studentships are awarded in the project of surveying the marine environment for microplastics using a novel hyperspectral infrared camera on a UAV.
Scholarship Award: The successful student will work with Dr Hugh Mortimer at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories to modify a mid-range Infra-Red (mid-IR) hyperspectral camera that he has developed. This camera takes multiple images of the surface, with each image in a separate waveband in the mid-IR. Some of these bands ‘see’ plastics whilst others don’t, but by combining and comparing different bands, plastics can be detected against a background of water, rocks or sand.
Number of Awards: Not Known
Scholarship can be taken in the UK
Eligibility: The student will be registered at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and hosted at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS).
Nationality: International students are eligible to apply.
