Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is a government body responsible to Scottish Government Ministers and, through them, to the Scottish Parliament. The task of SNH is to secure the conservation and enhancement of Scotland’s natural heritage.

SNH is funding this PhD studentship.

The aim of this PhD is to consider and quantify the range of economic and social benefits and costs relevant to possible species reintroduction programs in Scotland. At this point, species re introductions are planned though not approved. This means that the analysis will necessarily be ex ante (i.e. forecasting) rather than based on actual data on impacts. If the re introductions do progress within the timeframe of the studentship, then some observed impact data may be available for analysis. However research can draw on available experience, mainly in the U.S., and a range of potential valuation and impact modeling methods are available to consider the regional and national impacts of a prospective re introduction. It is also expected that the student may consider literature from the related fields such as psychology and anthropology as background to species valuation and social choice.

Applicants ideally would have some knowledge of economic appraisal methods, though this is not essential.

The student will be based in SAC but will be registered in the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh.
Stipend £13,000 per annum with fees up to £3,000 per annum paid.
