Senior Researcher in DIODE Lasers and LED Systems, Technical University of Denmark

DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering invites applicants for a position as senior researcher in DIODE lasers and LED systems. The position is for 3 years with a starting date as soon as possible.

DTU Fotonik at the Technical University of Denmark is one of the largest European institutes within photonics. DTU Fotonik cooperates with an extensive network of both Danish and foreign research institutions, organizations and business entities. The department is currently developing new and improved diode laser systems for medical applications, materials processing, biotechnology and optical sensing. Through international and national research collaborations with universities, research institutes and private companies, DTU Fotonik develops external cavity diode laser systems for i.e., diagnostics and treatment of cancer, laser displays, industrial tests, and fundamental studies of semiconductor amplifiers.

Job description:
The activities of the senior scientist will include research, education and innovation in diode laser systems and light emitting diode (LED) systems.

An important research area is the development of new high-power, tunable diode lasers with high spatial and temporal coherence based on both single emitter laser diodes and diode laser bars and stacks. External cavity techniques are employed to enhance the properties of the lasers. These lasers are used for direct applications and in the generation of new wavelengths by nonlinear frequency conversion.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have a PhD degree in optics or equivalent as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Assistant Professor, with documented strong research experience within several of the following areas:

High power diode lasers – single emitters, bars and stacks
External cavity diode laser systems
High brightness diode laser systems
Nonlinear optical frequency conversion
Medical applications of lasers
LEDs for display applications
High quality light sources based on LEDs
LEDs for medical applications

The department particularly welcomes applications from candidates who have experience with commercialization of research as well as collaboration with industry.

The candidate must have the documented ability to design and develop novel experimental platforms or methods in the field of laser physics. The candidate must be able to work independently and in a research team, in an interdisciplinary, cross institutional and international research environment, and disseminate his/her findings in oral and written research communications.

Assessment:
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:

scientific production and research potential at international level
innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities
the ability to promote and utilize research results
an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
the ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
