Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships and Scholarships
for Overseas Studies 2009/10
Information Note
1. A number of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships and Scholarships will be granted by
the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund to finance outstanding Hong Kong students for overseas studies
commencing in the 2009/10 academic year.
2. Successful candidates will be those with excellent scholastic achievements and strong
leadership abilities demonstrated in their extra-curricular activities. They are expected to have a strong
sense of commitment to Hong Kong and should be ready to contribute significantly to the society after
graduation from overseas studies.
3. Those who expect to commence full-time postgraduate or undergraduate studies in any tertiary
educational and / or academic institution outside Hong Kong in the 2009/10 academic year and who meet
the eligibility criteria set out in this Information Note may apply. The Fellowships / Scholarships will only
be conferred to students currently pursuing / having pursued study programmes in schools / institutions in
Hong Kong. Applications from students who are pursuing a study programme overseas at the time of
application will not be considered. Application for a study programme leading to a second Undergraduate /
Master / Doctoral degree or a study programme being currently pursued will not be considered as well. Due
to the very high standard set for this Award, no award will be granted if candidates are considered not
meritorious enough.
4. Further details of the Award are given below :-
Name of Award : (a) Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships for Overseas Studies (for studies
leading to a postgraduate degree either by research or by coursework).
(b) Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarships for Overseas Studies (for studies
leading to an undergraduate degree).
Duration of
Award
: (a) For Fellowships, up to three years for Doctoral degree or two years for Master
degree depending on the length of the proposed study and subject to the successful
candidates achieving progress which is deemed satisfactory by the Council.
(b) For Scholarships, up to three years subject to the successful candidates
achieving progress which is deemed satisfactory by the Council.
Eligibility : (a) An applicant for the Fellowship must fulfil the following criteria :-
(i) be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
(ii) has received at least 7 years of continuous education in Hong Kong;
(iii) be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission
requirements at the institution of his / her choice and be offered a place
subsequently;

(iv) holds a good Honours degree obtained in Hong Kong or equivalent
qualification OR expects to obtain such a degree or equivalent qualification
before 1.9.2009; and
(v) be proficient in English and Chinese, and has a good mastery of the
language in which his / her studies will be undertaken.
(b) An applicant for the Scholarship must fulfil the following criteria :-
(i) be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
(ii) has received at least 5 years of continuous education in Hong Kong;
(iii) be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission
requirements at the institution of his / her choice and be offered a place
subsequently*; and
(iv) be proficient in English and Chinese and has a good mastery of the language
in which his / her studies will be undertaken.
* Applications from students who wish to pursue medical studies overseas will not normally be
considered due to the licensing requirements of the Medical Registration (Amendment) Ordinance
1995.
Maximum Value
of Award
(Subject to review)
: (a) Fellowship: HK$283,000
(b) Scholarship: HK$262,000
The Council may adjust the value of the fellowship / scholarship taking into account
the actual university fees, necessary living expenses and other awards held
concurrently by the fellow / scholar to finance his / her studies overseas.
Conditions of
Award
: A successful candidate will be required to comply with or agree to comply with the
conditions of award should he / she decide to accept any award made under this
scheme. In the event of non-compliance in the course of the sponsored studies, the
Council may at any time prematurely terminate the fellowship / scholarship and he /
she may be required to repay such sum, not exceeding the total value of the award
so received, and upon such terms as the Council deems appropriate. A guarantor
acceptable to the Council will be required.
Furthermore, the award of the aforesaid Fellowship or Scholarship is conditional
upon the candidate meeting all the requirements stipulated by the chosen institution
and certain language, health and immigration requirements.

Application : Application Form can be obtained in person from Monday to Friday (8:45 a.m. -
1:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Offices are closed on Saturdays, Sundays &
Public Holidays.) between 2 July 2008 and 26 September 2008 from the following
two offices:-

Application Form is also obtainable by sending a return envelope (with local
mailing address and postage of HK$3.0) to the Sir Edward Youde Memorial
Fund (SEYMF) Council Secretariat at Room 1217, 12/F, Cheung Sha Wan
Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon, or downloading from
the website of the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) (Address:
http://www.sfaa.gov.hk/eng/public/index.htm).
Applications can be submitted by any one of the following methods:-
(i) completing the application form with legible handwriting in blue / black ink
and sending it to the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council Secretariat at
Room 1217, 12/F, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha
Wan Road, Kowloon by post or in person;
(ii) inputting data in the PDF proforma downloadable from SFAA’s website and
sending the duly signed hardcopy of the completed PDF proforma to the
SEYMF Council Secretariat by post or in person. Signature in the form of
digital image is not acceptable; or
(iii) inputting data in the PDF proforma downloadable from SFAA’s website and
submitting the completed proforma in electronic format to the SEYMF Council
Secretariat via email (address: seymfc_application@sfaa.gov.hk) with digital
signature supported by e-Cert (Personal) registered under the name of the
applicant and issued by a recognized Certification Authority in Hong Kong,
e.g. Hongkong Post. Applications submitted by electronic means not supported
by e-Cert will not be considered.
Deadline for applications submitted by post or email is 26 September 2008
(Hong Kong Time) while that for submission in person is at 5:45 p.m. on
26 September 2008. Late applications will not be accepted.
