The STARS Centre for Doctoral Training is an exciting consortium of 8 organizations, comprised of 4 universities and 4 research institutes, from around England, Scotland and Wales, who together are collaborating to offer training to PhD students in soil science.

Course Level: Studentships are available for pursuing research programme.

Study Subject: Studentships are awarded to train PhD students in soil science.

Scholarship Award: Those students eligible for a full award will be supported by the tax-free stipend (£14,296 in 2016/17), typically for 3.5 years.

Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility: These STARS studentships are only available to the UK and other EU nationals (due to funding criteria, EU nationals who have not been resident in the UK for the three years prior to the start of their studentship will be restricted to a fees-only award). To be eligible for a full award a student must:

  • Settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay
  • Been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship. This means they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences)
  • Not be residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. (This does not apply to UK or EU nationals).

Nationality: Only open to UK/EU residents.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have or expect to have, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualification gained outside the UK, in a relevant subject to the project they are applying for (these will be specified in the individual project descriptions).
