Structure and function of the gamma-secretase complex component nicastrin
Structure and function of the gamma-secretase complex component nicastrin
Description : The protein crystallography group (Than Laboratory) at the Leibniz Institute for Age Re-search – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena (Germany) invites applications for a PhD student position (TV-L E13/2) for the subject: Structure and function of the gamma-secretase complex component nicastrin The position, which is immediately available, is part of the Leibniz Graduate School on Aging and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA), a joint program of the Leibniz Institute for Age Research (FLI) and the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena. Our group is interested in the structure-function-relationship of proteins that are central to the process of aging and age related pathologies, focussing on the detailed mechanisms of the relevant proteins and their interactions with other biological macromolecules, substrates and inhibitors using biochemical, biophysical and protein crystallographic methods. As part of our research activities targeting proteins central to the development of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) we want to study the structure and function of nicastrin, the essential component and “doorkeeper” of the large transmembrane protease that finally liberates the AD-typical Abeta-peptides. For research lab description see www.fli-leibniz.de/groups/than_en.php. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with genuine interest in structural biology and Alzheimer’s Disease. The successful applicant will join a young and dynamic team and will participate in both, biochemical/molecular biological and protein crystallographic work. Previous experience in relevant techniques (cloning, protein expression, purification, analysis and crystallization as well as crystallographic work) is an advantage, but not necessary. The FLI provides an international and dynamic research environment with highly interacting groups. Central activities are organized by the LGSA and are open to all students of the institute. Further information on the Leibniz Graduate School of Aging and Age Related Diseases (LGSA) including application guidelines can be found at: http://www.fli-leibniz.de/phd/. Please acquaint yourself with the application procedure on our website, fill in the application form and send it electronically to the LGSA coordinator citing the code number PhD-112.
