Scholarship Description: This is an internationally joint PhD project between the University of Liverpool and the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) in Singapore. This project offers a unique opportunity for the student to work within the world-leading research university and institute with the chance to explore the vastly different cultures and environments. In the first 2 years, the student will work in Liverpool focusing on the fabrication of functional porous materials. In Liverpool, we have developed a range of novel techniques to fabricate aligned porous and hierarchically porous materials, and nanostructures such as nanoparticles, nanofibers and microtubes. The project will combine these techniques to produce functional metal oxide and composite materials with controlled pore morphology, porosity, surface functionality and mechanical stability with the aim to use such materials in energy storage particularly lithium battery. In the final 2 years, the student will continue the research in Singapore by assessing the materials for energy storage and optimizing the materials preparation procedure to improve energy storage capacity and efficiency.
