Job Description:The Magnetic Resonance Research Centre has a research activity, in collaboration with Microsoft Research, in the area of developing next generation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. MRI is established as a medical imaging technique although it has limitations. The MRRC group in Cambridge have been working on developing new MRI techniques which can be used in engineering applications to help the design of energy-efficient chemical processes. This work has gone very well and there are now opportunities to apply these new methods in the medical field – particularly with respect to the imaging of small children and the imaging of joints; each of these medical applications represents specific challenges to traditional MRI. Small children tend to move around a lot during the scan, and therefore images must be recorded as fast as possible. The imaging challenge with joints is quite different. In this case, joints are made up of materials of different magnetic susceptibility which give rise to artifacts in conventional MRI.

The research project will focus on the theoretical development and practical implementation of new approaches to MRI based on Bayesian signal processing methods along with implementation of sparse sampling strategies such as Compressed Sensing. There will be plenty of opportunities to do experimental work on the imaging machines but the student will also need to be mathematically competent and interested in the signal processing aspects of the project. One of the central challenges in achieving our goals is to reduce data acquisition times without introducing artifacts into the image data. An example of what we have achieved so far is to replace the need to acquire a 256 x 256 data point array with the requirement only to record 50 data points – whilst still obtaining the essential information! This represents a very significant advance in the implementation of MRI experiments. In the next phase of our work we will be collaborating with the medical community as well as the chemical industry in demonstrating a range of new imaging capabilities.
