Swedish-English Translation Impact Studentships, UK
Job Description: Two 3-year PhD studentships in the field of Swedish-English Translation Studies are available in the UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies, starting in September 2010. The studentships are sponsored by Mr Stefan Olsson, London; the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, San Francisco; the Swedish Academy, Stockholm; and the UCL Impact Studentship scheme. The studentships form the centrepiece of a collaborative project with the Embassy of Sweden in London, designed to foster Swedish-English literary translation in the UK.

Studentship Description:One studentship will undertake a historical survey of the translation of Swedish literature (literary texts as well as non-fiction) into English. The second studentship will focus on developing strategies for the translation of formally experimental contemporary Swedish literature.
The two successful candidates will be expected to work closely with staff and students at UCL and with the Culture Section of the Embassy of Sweden in London to promote Swedish literature in translation in the UK, for example by organising events for academic and public audiences, and liaising with translation companies, publishing houses, schools, cultural institutions, and other stakeholders as appropriate.
Person Specification:The successful applicant will need to have at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. S/he will have demonstrable experience in the practice and/or theory of translation, and native or near-native speaker competence in Swedish. Experience in events organisation will be an advantage.
Potential candidates must satisfy the eligibility criteria (academic and residency) and person specifications. The award provides funding for tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and a student stipend within the range of £15,747 – £16,545 for three years.
