Swiss Federal Research Institute PhD Position
The Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss
Federal Research Institute WSL, which in turn is part of the ETH Domain.
Approximately 500 people, 130 of them in Davos, work on an integrated
approach to handling natural hazards and on topics related to the
sustainable use and protection of the environment. The Research Unit
Snow and Permafrost is investigating the cryosphere and its interaction
with the environment. For our research on atmosphere # surface
exchange (currently the focus is on projects on the sheltering effect of
vegetation against soil or snow erosion), we are looking for a
PhD position, Flow over Snow, Soil and Vegetation
You investigate i) the turbulent exchange of mass and momentum over a
vegetated surface in our cold wind tunnel; ii) sheltering effect of vegetation
(grass) to reduce the boundary layer shear for the protection against soil
or snow erosion; iii) You also learn to operate the corresponding sensor
technology (hot wire, cantilever turbulence sensors) and publish your
results in international journals.
Your qualifications: University degree (Physics, Meteorology,
Engineering), first significant publications, experience in experimental
work and sensor technology, programming skills (MatLab, LabView),
fluency in English and German, willingness to work under harsh conditions
in our cold wind tunnel.
