Switzerland ETH Zurich PhD position in Storm Precipition
The Chair of Hydrology and Water Resources Management, Institute of
Environmental Engineering, ETH Zurich has a vacancy for in the context
of natural hazards. The research will focus on understanding the
basin-scale connections between the space-time structure of storm rainfall
fields and the occurrence of widespread natural hazards such as
landslides, floods, etc., in the Swiss Alps. Particular goals are (a) to
develop and implement statistical techniques to analyse the space-time
structure in storm precipitation from raingauge and radar data, (b) to
identify important storm properties for the occurrence of natural hazards
and develop appropriate hazard indexes, and (c) to implement various
stochastic (point process and scaling-based) models for the simulation of
extreme rainfall, including parameter estimation and model validation
techniques. The PhD student will be integrated into a new developing
group on precipitation analysis in the research unit of Prof. Burlando,
which consists of other students working on statistical methods in
space-time rainfall analysis, stochastic modelling of precipitation and
developing the calibration and testing of a new X-band radar installed in
the high Alps. The PhD student will also collaborate with researchers
within the broad scope of the ETH project APUNCH (Advanced Process
UNderstanding and prediction of hydrological extremes and Complex
Hazards), in particular the Swiss meteorological office MeteoSwiss. More
information about the APUNCH project can be found at the following URL:
http://www.cces.ethz.ch/research/nature/nature_projects/approved_nature_projects/APUNCH
The successful applicant will be highly motivated for scientific research,
have specific interest in the topic and appropriate background, have
personal initiative, be comfortable with both team and independent work,
and have good organisational as well as oral and written communication
skills. Prerequisites are a strong background in hydrology/meteorology
and mathematical statistics, experience with programming and handling
large datasets, and excellent spoken and written command of English.
Standard ETH Zurich PhD conditions are provided. Zurich is an attractive
city with excellent access to the Alps and good connections
Europe-wide.Additional information about the position may be obtained by
writing to Prof. Paolo Burlando (paolo.burlando@ethz.ch). Applications
should include a detailed CV and a motivation letter, and should be sent
as single PDF file to hydrologie@ifu.baug.ethz.ch.
The application deadline is 1st April 2008. The position will remain open
until a suitable candidate is found.
Applications that can be submitted only via regular mail should be sent to
Ms Manuela Haas, IfU HIL G 32.3, ETH Zurich, 8093 Zurich, Switzerland.
