Bacterial infections of honeybees and colony losses

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to work on a three-year project aimed at uncovering the bacteria associated with honeybees and their role for the recent inexplicable and severe colony losses.

The project will combine apiculture, microbiology, genetics and behavioral ecology. The actual work will initially involve surveys of damaged Swiss apiaries followed by identification of the associated microorganisms. Laboratory and field experiments with honeybees at the individual and colony level will be conducted on the virulence and transmission of the identified bacteria. The role of other honeybee pathogens for the course of bacterial diseases will also be evaluated. For carrying out the experiments, the successful candidate would be primarily based at the Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux in Bern, Switzerland, where we have excellent facilities for both apiculture and molecular work. The PhD thesis would also be based at the University of Bern and will be in the form of 3-5 papers with the aim to publish them in international peer-reviewed journals (Dr. Peter Neumann, http://evolution.unibe.ch/set_team_e.htm).

Candidates should have a strong background in microbiology and molecular genetics. Prior experience with honeybees would be a bonus. Funding for a salary according to CH standards and consumables for three years is available through an ALP grant. The projected starting date is from April 2008. All nationalities are eligible.
