Teacher Education Scholarship Program 2009

August 18, 2008

The NSW Department of Education  and Training’s Teacher Education Scholarship Program, Australia, is a key initiative designed to recruit quality teachers.

Up to 230 scholarships will be offered to ensure more graduate teachers are available in the schools where they are needed most.

The scholarships support talented students who wish to be employed as secondary teachers in mathematics, science, technological and applied studies or English.

At least 60 of the scholarships will be available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people wishing to become primary teachers or secondary teachers of any subject. Many Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who were already working in schools or working with young people have become successful scholarship holders and teachers.

Scholarships can be for 1,2,3,4 or 5 years and are available to students who are or will be studying an approved initial teacher education course at a NSW or ACT tertiary institution. Eligible students include those undertaking, or intending to undertake a suitable degree, or an undergraduate or postgraduate teacher education program. Many scholarship holders have come from a range of industry backgrounds, including maths and science related fields, and have gone on to become successful teachers.

Scholarship holders receive generous financial benefits while studying for a teacher qualification. On successful completion of studies, they will be guaranteed permanent employment in a NSW public school in an agreed location.

Applications close on Friday 10 October 2008. Apply now for the 2009 Teacher Education Scholarship Program.
