The Chateaubriand Fellowship is a grant offered by the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the United States.
Every year, it allows students enrolled in American universities – PhD Candidates (preferably) or Post docs (in specific cases) – to conduct research in a French laboratory (public or private) for a 3 to 10 month period of time.
This program has two main goals :
- 1. To allow American researchers to benefit from an experience in one of the best laboratories in France
- 2. To develop scientific cooperation between France and the United States.
Chateaubriand recipients receive:
- monthly allowances (2000 euros)
- a round-trip ticket
- health insurance abroad
The research would be performed in a French university, a school of engineering, a national laboratory or a private enterprise. In some cases, the fellowship can be co-sponsored by the interested French institution or company.
No particular level of French is required: French lessons may be available upon arrival in France.
Factors considered in an evaluation of a candidate’s application:
- Curriculum vitae, list of publications, and academic transcripts
- Quality and relevance of proposed research project
- Priority will be given to research projects which are part of a French-American collaboration
- Letters of recommendation
- Letter of invitation from the French laboratory considered in the candidate’s proposal, with description of existing or planed collaboration between the home and host laboratories.
