THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIPS 2009 FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

July 7, 2008

THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIPS  (OPEN FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS)

In October 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation of Seattle, USA announced a donation
to the University of Cambridge as an endowment for
the Gates Cambridge Trust.
The purpose of the Trust is to award scholarships to
enable outstanding young men and women from
outside the United Kingdom to study as graduate
students at the University of Cambridge. The
Trustees award scholarships on the basis of a person’s
intellectual ability, capacity for leadership, and
desire to use their knowledge to contribute to the
well-being of society.
The Trust expects to elect around 110 new Scholars
annually, of whom about 45 will be students who are
permanently resident in the United States of
America. Approximately 240 Gates Scholars are
studying in Cambridge at any one time.
In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the Trust
looks for students of leadership potential, in any
walk of life, coupled with exceptional academic
ability, and for whom advanced study at Cambridge
would be particularly appropriate. The Trust
requires there to be a good match between an
applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and what
Cambridge has to offer in its graduate programme.
Gates Cambridge Scholars participate fully in the life
of the University and its Colleges, while forming also
their own distinctive community. After graduation
Gates Scholars join a Gates Alumni Association
which is part of the University’s influential
international network, bringing vision and new
ideas to improving the lives of citizens throughout
the world, and working to overcome social and
economic injustice.
Gates Cambridge Scholars are awarded only to
students who gain admission to Cambridge
University through the regular admissions
procedures. The scholarship funds:
• All relevant University and College Fees
• A maintenance allowance for a single student (£12,250 for
12 months for 2008-09)
• An economy one-way airfare to the UK at the start of the
course of study, and an economy one-way airfare from the UK
at the end

Scholars may also apply for discretionary funding
towards dependants’ allowance, conferences,
fieldwork, overruns and other matters relating to
their academic courses.
Applicants from the USA who wish to be considered
for graduate admission and a Gates Cambridge
Scholarship for entry in October 2009 must apply,
using the University’s Board of Graduate Scholars
GRADSAF form, by 15 October 2008. Shortlisted
candidates will be invited to interview in Annapolis,
MD in early February 2009.
For applicants from countries other than the USA
(and American students currently studying abroad)
there are various deadlines later in the year, and
applicants should consult the websites listed below
for further information. Shortlisted candidates in
this category will be interviewed in April /May 2009,
either in person or by telephone.
