General Instructions for Application
1. Eligibility: The John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Competition is open to organists who live or study anywhere in the United States. There is no age restriction for candidates. However, to be considered, an applicant should be an organist engaged in, or preparing to engage in, a course of study of music as utilized in religious services of any type, at a school, college, or university, and whose continuance in such a study is hindered by lack of funds. It is imperative that you notify the Auditions Coordinator as soon as you have decided to be a candidate for the Rodland Scholarship. 2. Prepare a high-quality CD of three organ pieces. Do not send DVDs. Four copies of the recording must be submitted with the application. Total playing time of the three pieces shall not exceed thirty minutes. Music selected should be appropriate for use in worship.
Required: J. S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 546
Select and prepare one piece from each of the following periods:
Romantic: (Suggested composers) Vierne, Widor, Liszt, Tournemire, Franck, Dupre,
Reger, Mendelssohn, Brahms
Contemporary: (Suggested composers) Wyton, Walcha, Pinkham, Purvis, Schroeder,
Langlais, Messiaen, Hindemith, Alain, Dupre
3. Application form: Complete form entirely. Incomplete forms will not be considered.
Send four copies of your application form.
References: Secure three references with one being from a clergyperson or church musician. Use the forms provided. These references should be sent directly to Gloria Norton, Audition Coordinator, The John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Fund, 93 Ross Avenue, Emerson NJ 07630-1517. They may also be e-mailed: GloriNor@aol.com. Please do not send attachments.
5. Resume: On a separate page, prepare a resume which includes your organ repertoire list as well as your experience. Send four copies of your resume.
6. Transcripts: Secure official transcripts of your college and graduate work.
7. Essay: On a separate page, write an essay telling of your philosophy and goals for life as an organist and musician serving a religious institution. Give rationale for your need of scholarship aid at this time in your life. Send four copies of your essay.
8. Scores: Please send four copies of the Romantic and Contemporary pieces on your audition recording (Xerox okay-they will be destroyed after the competition). Do not send copies of the Bach.

Deadline: All materials MUST be received by the coordinator by January 5, 2009.
Be sure to allow ample time for the materials to arrive, as the deadline will be strictly observed, and late or incomplete applications will not be considered. All application materials become the property of the Board of Managers of the John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Note: if you send your application via express mail service (such as FedEx), please sign the
waiver for a signature required upon delivery. Requiring a signature will only delay delivery
of your application.
1. Finalists will be selected by March 12, 2009, and will be notified immediately thereafter.
10. Auditions and interviews of the finalists will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009, in Northern New Jersey. Finalists will be required to demonstrate skills in hymn playing, and choral conducting from the console, in addition to performing the solo pieces from their audition tape. Each finalist will also be asked to bring a photo and a brief biographical sketch, for the purpose of publicity, in the event that he or she is selected to receive the scholarship.
11. Awards: One scholarship award of $8,000; possibly runner-up scholarships of $3,500 and $2,500; and possibly one or more scholarships to deserving High School or undergraduate students for summer study.
12. The Scholarship Winner will be the featured artist at the annual John R. Rodland Community Hymn Festival to be held in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on Sunday evening, May 17, 2009.
