Purpose:

  • Honour the life achievements of both Mary and Carl Leonard.
  • Identify and foster students with outstanding leadership qualities and an interest in making a difference on international issues.
  • provide a cross-cultural learning experience in order to increase a student’s or early career researcher’s perception of the ‘real world’ issues facing populations in need.
  • allow students or early career researchers to appreciate global issues from different perspectives as actively involved volunteers – with a view to becoming more socially responsible ‘global citizens’.

Components of the award:

  • Study or Research Abroad
    Coordinated in accordance with the existing QUT Student Exchange Program, a student or early career researcher will be provided with funding (e.g. $5000) to participate in approved study or research for a recommended period of one semester at one of QUT’s international partner institutions located in a lesser Developed Country.
  • Volunteer or Service Learning Abroad
    Coordinated in consultation with the QUT College of Excellence guidelines regarding Volunteering and Service Learning, a student or early career researcher will be provided with funding (e.g. $5000) to support their participation in an approved program internationally.

Key dates :

  • Applications open March 2010
  • Applications close 31 July 2010
  • Successful applicants notified by second week of September  2010
  • Successful applicants to travel during 2011
