PhD position
Project description

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry runs several stations that measure atmospheric trace gases which are important for the global carbon cycle and climate change. Some of these stations use tall towers to sample air from different heights of up to 300 m. The tower measurements are then interpreted with the help of state-of-the-art atmospheric transport models.

Job description
An important parameter for the interpretation of the data is the mixing layer height at the station. The mixing layer height can be determined with a ceilometer, an optical instrument that works like a small lidar. For the optimal determination of the mixing layer height from the ceilometer signal, several algorithms have to be tried and improved. There are also plans to evaluate a new generation of ceilometers, to take part in international validation campaigns and to work with lidar measurements from space. There will be close collaboration with the transport modeling group as well as with the tall-tower-group in the same department.

Requirements

Applicants should have a master’s degree or comparable in physics, meteorology, environmental sciences or a similar discipline and be fluent in English. Knowledge of atmospheric science, optics, or advanced data analysis techniques (e.g. wavelets) as well as programming skills and UNIX experience would be useful.

Payment
TVöD E13/2

Application
