The National Nuclear Laboratory PhD Studentship, UK
Job Description: A PhD project studentship sponsored by the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is available at the University of Liverpool. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical Engineering & Electronics at the University of Liverpool. The project aims to develop a gamma-ray sensor, couple it with a 3-D vision system and provide control algorithms for a mechanical manipulator for decommissioning applications.
The ability to locate and identify radioactive material with high precision will lead to reliable quantification of waste into low/intermediate/ high brackets, with the potential to significantly reduce the cost and time of decommissioning. The system will be capable of producing gamma ray images in real time during the decommissioning operation. The optical stereoscopic system will also provide information regarding the environment to assist access and route-planning for a mobile robot.
The proposed solution will be developed by nuclear physicists and electronic engineers and will utilise state-of-the-art gamma-ray imaging sensors that have been developed and built by the Department of Physics for radiological imaging in medical and industrial applications. The Department of Electrical Engineering & Electronics have established expertise in the theory and application of machine vision and image/signal processing, as well as geometric and pattern analysis modelling.
The successful candidate will lead the development and initial deployment of the imaging system. Experience with radiation sensors and/or image processing / mathematical optimisation will be an advantage. The Studentship is available for 3.5 years from 1 October 2010
